Transfer files to Azure VMs at lightning-fast speeds with Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure.

At Microsoft Ignite, Veeam unveiled the Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure beta. This new release is a standalone utility that allows you to securely copy files from your on-site location to Microsoft Azure VMs (virtual machines) and vice versa. Hybrid cloud models are becoming increasingly popular and will remain so in the following years. Therefore, using cloud resources for specific use cases, such as Microsoft Azure VMs, will provide your company with additional benefits and enable you to become more competitive in your sector.

Unfortunately, these new technologies bring problems that cannot be solved using the same approaches we’ve used in the past. For example, our beta announcement mentioned the difficulty of copying files to and from your virtual machine, which is more complex than it appears and even as it should be. While this white paper describes several strategies for addressing this problem, the methods aren’t straightforward. Veeam has addressed these difficulties with Veeam FastSCP for Microsoft Azure.

Rules for the Firewall:

In the previous paradigm, firewall rules were referred to as endpoints and must be established for each VM. You can create a security group in the ARM model and use it to create firewall rules for all the VMs in that resource group. In my case, I had Veeam-VMBP as a resource group, and I formed a network security group with the same name. You’ll want to add an inbound rule here to ensure that your traffic goes to the VM on port 5986 from the machine running FastSCP (default HTTPS Windows Remote Management).

This latest free application, aimed at IT managers and IT developers using Azure, provides the following:

  • Easy-to-use, reliable, and rapid file copy: Allows you to copy files between on-premises and Azure-based virtual machines with ease (VMs)
  • Copies of secure files: There is no requirement for a VPN tunnel between the on-premises deployment and Azure because data is transmitted over HTTPS.
  • Automatic file copy job scheduling: Scheduled file copy jobs may be configured for periodic copies to and from Azure VMs, giving IT managers confidence and peace of mind.
  • No coding required: Job setup is as simple as a few mice clicks in a wizard-driven environment.
